Dorothy Voss Obituary

Dorothy Voss, of Elmhurst formerly of Morton Grove, beloved wife of Jurgen; dear mother of Carolyn Melek, Peter (Sue) Voss and the late Donna (Bruce) Anderson; loving grandmother of Jennifer, Jason, Daniel, David, Kurt, Kirsten, Claire, Lauren and Ashley; cherished great grandmother of Levi, Noel, Penelope and Gavin Peter; fond sister of the late Richard "Dickie", Jeannette and Bob. Memorial service will be held on Monday November 8th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter's United Church of Christ 125 W. Church St. Elmhurst, IL.

Dorothy was the first woman in Morton Grove to fly in an airplane when she took a flight with her father Richard who was a pioneer in aviation.

Dorothy grew up in the Northcenter neighborhood in Chicago and attended Waters Elementary, then to Amundsen High School where she was a National Honor Society recipient. Her first job was with Lutz Café which is still open in its original location on Montrose Ave. She graduated from Niles North High School in 1953 and went on to attend Northwest University where took classes for business sectoral. Her organizational skills and knack for numbers later enabled her to be the accountant for Dependable Cleaning Service.

Dorothy met her husband Jurgen - of nearly 68 years - when their Grandparents were together at a party and set them up on a blind date. They were married in Morton Grove in 1957.

Jurgen and Dorothy went on to build four homes in the western suburbs, all of which were designed by her and built by Jurgen - who was a Union Carpenter for 35 years.

They joined Saint Peter’s United Church of Christ in Elmhurst in 1956, of which they are still members. They fostered many lifelong friendships from St Peter’s, which brought them to travel the world, play tennis, and host many dinner parties with these dear friends.

Dorothy was an avid gardener at her home in Elmhurst where she also loved to cook, sew, and needlepoint. With this, she loved to make small gifts for friends and family or princess costumes for her grandkids. Most of all, she loved to spend quality time with her extended family - which brought her the most joy in life

Dorothy was the first woman in Morton Grove to fly in an airplane when she took a flight with her father Richard.
