Dolores Guthrie Obituary

Dolores Louise Guthrie, nee Ostrowski, peacefully passed on to eternal life on February 27, 2023. Loving wife of the late John T. (Jack) Guthrie. Beloved Mother of Lynn (John) Kalanik, Dawn (Gerry) Jenich, the late Lori Guthrie, James (Mary Rita) Guthrie, the late Jacquelyn Kuespert, and Karen (Carl) Helwing. Cherished Grandmother to Joshua Kuespert, Jonathan (Courtney) Kuespert, Morgan (Patrick) Forsberg, Jack (Julia) Kalanik, Jeremy Jenich, Ian Guthrie, James (Alison) Helwing, Mike Kalanik, Luke Helwing, and Moira Guthrie. Dear Great Grandmother to Miller Forsberg, and soon-to-arrive Baby Boy Kuespert. Grandma Babe’s 10 beautiful grandchildren and great grandchild brought her pure joy and inspired her to persevere despite mounting health issues and the challenges she faced living independently until her final days. Grandma Babe forged a special bond with each of her grandchildren, thus making each grandchild feel as if they were her only one.

Affectionately known as “Babe” to many, she was born on March 27, 1932, in Chicago to Walter and Stella, nee Sodin, Ostrowski. Dolores married Jack, her soulmate and the love of her life, and they were together for 50 years until Jack’s passing in 2008. They raised their family in Palatine and then relocated to the Morton Grove/Skokie area later in life.

Mom/Grandma Babe was a devoted homemaker, excellent cook, amazing cookie baker, a highly creative person who lovingly decorated her home for every holiday, and a good friend to many. Dolores forged many meaningful and devoted friendships throughout her lifetime. She also was a gifted gardener, avid card player, enjoyed local and worldwide travel, family dinners and outings. She also inspired many family traditions, all of which focused on keeping the family unit lovingly intact. These traditions will continue in her honor. The essence of Dolores’ life can be summed up simply: She lived for her family.
