Mary Schlag Obituary

Mary Therese “Terry” Schlag, nee Hojnacki, 89, of Glenview, IL, formerly of Morton Grove, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018, surrounded by her family and wonderful caregivers from Rainbow Hospice and Belmont Senior Living in Glenview, IL.
Terry was born on November 14, 1929, in Evanston IL, to Boleslaus Hojnacki and Lorraine Clemons, nee Doetsch. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy for Girls, Nauvoo IL, in 1947. She returned to Evanston and in 1950 graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing. She married the love of her life, Harry W. Schlag, on July 14, 1951, and they started their family shortly thereafter. Terry returned to her nursing career in 1967 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. She later worked with August Durso, MD, and retired from nursing in May of 1998 after working as a nurse in the Alzheimer’s unit at Whitehall of Deerfield Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her adoring husband Harry, her parents, step-father Jim, and son-in-law Mark Schwartz. She is survived by 5 children: Christine Schwartz, Donna (Rick) McCullough, TeriAnn Gannon, Edward Schlag, and Susan Schlag; 8 grandchildren: Jessica, Ben, Ronnie, Christi, Cory, Charie, Emily and David; 4 great-grandchildren: Spencer, Grant, Gianna and Penny; sister Helyn "Lynn" (Dave) Carlson, and many nieces and nephews.
Terry had a zest for life and was known for always speaking her mind. She loved spending time with her family, whether hiking in the Rocky Mountains, relaxing on the Carolina Shores, or taking long road trips to her mother’s farm in Wilburton, Oklahoma, with her family in tow. She always had time for her children, was never too busy to hear their woes, and always offered tender advice and comforting support.
Whenever she had a free moment, Terry could be found enjoying her other great passion: reading. She was a regular patron of the Morton Grove Public Library, and after retiring from nursing, spent time there as a volunteer.
